Eye tests

There is a standard charge for NHS eye tests, but opticians do not have to
charge the basic fee and may charge more, so it is important that you ask
about the cost before you book your test.

You will be exempt from eye test charges if you are in one of the
following categories:

you are under 18, or are 19 and in full-time education
you have diabetes or glaucoma, or are over 40 and have a close relative
with glaucoma
you are registered partially sighted or have certain complex lenses
you or your partner receives income support, job seekers allowance,
family credit, disability work allowance or either of you holds an AG2
certificate

If you think you qualify for an exemption, ask at your dentists, post office
or pharmacists for an AG1 booklet – this gives full details of all
exemptions

You do not have to get your glasses from the same optician who did your
eye test

Prescriptions

There is a fixed charge for prescriptions. You can buy a "season ticket"
which can save you money on your prescription charges if you need a
large number of items on prescription – ask your pharmacist for details.
