CHC research
Members of East Birmingham CHC decide on topics for research
projects at a yearly meeting. A number of project groups exist
which members join if they have a particular interest in an area of
health services. These may change from year to year, depending on
the priorities agreed for research by members.

The following are a few examples of research conducted recently:
In-patient services at Heartlands Hospital
Mental health services for older adults
Hospital and community services for people with diabetes
User satisfaction with Day Surgery procedures at Heartlands
Hospital
User satisfaction with the BADGER (Birmingham and District GP
Emergency Rooms) service
Survey of services offered by GPs in East Birmingham
Continuing Care establishments in East Birmingham
A&E, outpatients and inpatient services at the Children's Hospital
A variety of methods are used to gather information, including face-
to-face interviews, postal surveys and focus groups. A recent
innovation has been the introduction of a "Virtual CHC" composed
of pupils from local schools studying for a health-related
qualification. Members of the Virtual CHC have undertaken
training in committee skills, interviewing techniques, visiting skills
and report writing to enable them to carry out research into services
for children in the locality. In setting up this scheme, it was hoped
that pupils would develop new skills that would help them in their
future career; it was also envisaged that young people would be
more candid about their views on services if they were interviewed
by individuals of a similar age.
